This famous site of the Chardham Yatra has allured devotees from not just every corner of our country but also from the neighbouring countries to the joyous Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. The Badrinath Temple, also known as the Badrinarayan Temple, got its name derived from berries' meaning Badri and 'Lord' meaning Nath. It stands tall at a height of 3,133 meters, is situated on the banks of river alaknanda and is amongst some of the most visited pilgrimages in India.
This mythological place has effigies of Lord Vishnu or Badrinath set up in a meditative-posture and a visit to this temple is believed to bring nirvana and redemption from the sufferings. Another well expressed and accepted belief is that one can break the chain of births and deaths by offering prayers at this famous temple.
The temple stands majestically tall at a height of 50 feet and has a colourful entrance called the Singhdwar which has three sections: the Garbhagriha, the Darshan Mandap, and the Sabha Mandap. The idols of Lord Badri Narayan, along with other Gods are established in the Garbhagriha or the Sanctum. The Sabha Mandap is the spot where the pilgrims gather to offer prayers. The effigy of Lord Vishnu is around 3.3 feet tall and is made of Saligram stone which mesmerises the devotees and captivates them, as they wait in long queues and stand the bursting crowd just to get a glimpse of it.
Best Time to visit Badrinath
The temple opens every year in the month of April (probably last week) or May (mostly first week) and closes for winters in the third week of November. So, from the month of May up till October is the ideal time to visit the Temple and other nearby sightseeing places like Vasundhara falls, Tapt kund, Surya kund and Alkapuri glaciers etc.
